for
1,2,3, Whiteout: The End of the Light Age

"James June Schneider has managed a prolific rate of output even after moving to Paris for an advanced degree. He's bringing back a 16mm print of his exquisitely stylized sci-fi feature 1, 2, 3, Whiteout :The End of the Light Age, an allegorical, speculative, late New Wave take on human trajectories through the City of Light." Craig Baldwin (Other Cinema)

"I like the way the movie is shot (maybe a bit shaky by times, but that adds to the gritty character) and the whole has a certain New Wave feel - Mind you, I’m speaking of the sixties here, Godard and co, not Siouxsie and co - a style I like a lot: no hurries, lots of time to look around, a strong emphasis on people and buildings, a slightly spaced out look from too much reading, and long conversations. And it’s french. And the actress could have been casted by Godard himself. The internet also says it’s a tone poem, and that’s true: lots of attention went to the soundscapes and editing.

The DVD contains two short movies (+/- 3 minutes each) as a bonus - The soundtrack of these is made by Violet. Actually the two form one movie - Degredation 1: X-Ray - cut in two parts: “Part 1: Shroud of Security” and “Part 2: Government radiation” - which can be regarded as two visual studies documenting the effect of x-ray radiation (coming from X-Ray checks at airports in part 1, coming US Government security X-Ray machines in Washington DC in part 2) on unprocessed film. And implicitly saying something about the radiation to which humans are exposed." Noiseblog

"1,2,3, Whiteout: The End of the Light Age comes from James June Schneider, an American experimental filmmaker who resides in France. Schneider is an advocate of the process of ‘vampling’, which uses video images in a live performance, processing and feeding them through various distortion effects, in the same way that an audio artist samples various sounds. Schneider is part of one such live vampling performance group Matterlink. Schneider has also made a number of short films, including his Dystopian trilogy Oasis (1995), Blue is Beautiful (1997) and Median Strip (1999), which are not science-fiction films but made up of various images of America. Schneider has made various experimental films that consist of things like a record needle scratching the film emulsion.

... there is a beauty to the effects that Schneider achieves – shots of night buildings being lit up with light that seems like shifting sand blowing across them, or interesting effects with mottled spots and the shadows cast by lights behind trees crossing building... images of streetlights and pedestrian crossing signals, cranes in shipyards, the patterns made by carnival lights or neon reflected on the river. There are numerous scenes of streets and building exteriors by night wherein the film is affected by flecks of what looks like glowing fireflies..." Moria, New Zealand

NOTES
Some have already confused this film with the film by Dominic Sena starring Kate Beckinsale in a Hollywood interpretation of Greg Rucka's comic book Whiteout, now in production (Reese Witherspoon was supposed to be the lead). 1,2,3, Whiteout deals with another kind of snow, one in which the whiteout is composed of television snow/static and man-made light transmissions. In this kind of whiteout, the horizon which disappears is not the landscape, but the horizon of becoming itself.
