Sound & Sound Actors
A word from the director, James June Schneider, on the soundtrack of 1,2,3, Whiteout

"Often I have created the soundtrack before shooting or editing the image as with Median Strip (1999). The soundtrack for 1,2,3, Whiteout was made so it can stand on it's own as an audio performance or a radio show just as the picture track of the film can function without the sound. In other words, the two were constructed to operate as independent forces which work in counterpoint. But it was the collaboration with different electronic sound artists which was vital for creating this film. The soundtrack is composed of found, sampled, and synthesized sound as well music/songs composed for the film. The latter were created by Elmapi and AE and the soundscapes were recorded and composed by Richard Harrison and Michael J. Schumacher amongst others.
Drone Hill, a side project of Richard Harrison (of legendary Spaceheads) serves as one of the fundamental sound materials which runs throughout the film. I listened to the album for hours on end while working on the script. "Drone Hill" (Hot Air, 1999) was the title of an album Harrison made by placing sound captors on the wire fence at his brother's farm whereby creating an enormous recording device, a sort of "aeolian harp" capturing vibrations and various weather conditions periodically recorded over 3 years.

Accident and Emergency (AE) from Sonig records performs original music as a Greek chorus in the film. Emiko Ota (singer/drummer/vibraphone) appears in person, in voice, and on screen in 4 different scenes, lamenting, advising and commenting. We collaborated on the lyrics. Andrew Sharpley (the "A" of AE) also acts in one scene.
Elmapi who toured the US on her second album in the winter of 2006 (mixed and mastered by Andy Moor of Dutch band The Ex) has composed two original tracks for the film as well as acting as an agent in 1,2,3, Whiteout. Sound from dozens of different films were sampled along with found sound recorded by Pierre who drew on her experience as an electro-acoustician as she transformed the material. Also check out her 1st album "Pop-Up" (Lentonia Records, 2005).
The film also includes a track from NY sound artist Michael J. Schumacher's "Fidicin Drones" and a clip from legendary Soviet electro experimentalists Notchnoi Prospekt. Erik Minkkinen who created the legendary international "Placard" headphone festival also plays the role a soundman in the film."
